In the 18th century, the sculptor F.X. Messerschmidt created the so-called "Character heads". The bizarre facial expressions of the heads were revolutionary in a time, where sculptures usually represented saints or members of the royal family in a glorifying way. Rumours were spread that these heads were an expression of F.X. Messerschmidt's mental illness. The suspicion of Schizophrenia has never been wiped out, although it has never been proved definitely.
